Shout Out to the Shootout Volunteers!

Image
We definitely know how to have great events at the Lake of the Ozarks and we think this year’s Shootout is no exception as we celebrate another successful race event in the books this year.  After months of planning and more than a week of action-packed events, the race teams as well as numerous local businesses at the Lake of the Ozarks and hundreds of volunteers are happy it went off so well, relieved it is done, and exhausted buy joyful for what they contributed and experienced.  photo credit: Fun Lake MO We are always SO grateful to the racing crews and sponsors for all they do.   It is so unique to be able to see the caliber of boats that participate in the Shootout in an unsanctioned race in the middle of the Midwest!   At the same time, we also know that the Shootout could not take place without the thousands of hours of volunteer labor provided by local individuals with a passion to help their lake area charity. That is why today’s blog is dedicated as a ...

The Great Dam Duck Drop – Another Example of the Heart of Lake of the Ozarks Community

Image
The Lake of the Ozarks Regional Economic Development Center is proud that the lake area is known for having a tradition of investing in the local community and working to make a positive difference in the lives of the people who live here. There are so many volunteer and donation based events that provide resources to families and individuals in our community who are most in need.  The Great Dam Duck Drop is a wonderful example of that kind of community spirit in action. The Great Dam Duck Drop is a two-day annual event starting with the Lake of the Ozarks Golf Tournament on Friday, August 6 th , and the Family Fun Zone and Official Duck Drop on Saturday, August 7 th .   The entire event is to raise proceeds for Ozark Coast Kiwanis which supports local children’s charities and organizations.   A longer list of the charities that will receive money can be seen on the FAQ page of the website under “Where does the money go?” But a short list includes the Food Pantry, La...

The Meaning Behind Memorial Day

Image
It is easy to look at the upcoming 3-day weekend as the official kickoff to summer.  But when you look at the way Memorial Day began and has evolved, the holiday brings a much deeper meaning and symbolism than many realize.  In the United States, the concept of Memorial Day began with Decoration Day, which was about honoring those veterans who died in the Civil War.  Over 620,000 soldiers were lost in that war and the tradition of decorating their graves began before the war ended.  One of the earliest examples of this type of commemoration occurred on May 1, 1865 when regiments of the U.S. Colored Troops and over 1,000 recently freed people gathered at the site of a mass grave of Union soldiers to dedicate a new, proper burial for them.  In May of 1868, it was decreed by General John A Logan that May 30 should be a day to decorate their graves and honor the sacrifice of all those who fought and died in the Civil War. After the First World War, which took 8.5 m...
