The Great Dam Duck Drop – Another Example of the Heart of Lake of the Ozarks Community

The Lake of the Ozarks Regional Economic Development Center is proud that the lake area is known for having a tradition of investing in the local community and working to make a positive difference in the lives of the people who live here. There are so many volunteer and donation based events that provide resources to families and individuals in our community who are most in need.  The Great Dam Duck Drop is a wonderful example of that kind of community spirit in action.

The Great Dam Duck Drop is a two-day annual event starting with the Lake of the Ozarks Golf Tournament on Friday, August 6th, and the Family Fun Zone and Official Duck Drop on Saturday, August 7th.  The entire event is to raise proceeds for Ozark Coast Kiwanis which supports local children’s charities and organizations.  A longer list of the charities that will receive money can be seen on the FAQ page of the website under “Where does the money go?” But a short list includes the Food Pantry, Lake Area Big Brothers Big Sisters, Wonderland Camp, Citizens Against Domestic Violence, Kids Harbor and more!

The Duck Drop is organized by a group of volunteers who work together all year long to plan the event and seek sponsors to help make the whole thing happen.  Each year, area businesses and individuals provide everything from the prize money, gifts and giveaways, to the activities at the Fun Zone and even the helicopter service.  The planning committee for Duck Drop tries to make sure there are ways for everyone to give whether they have $5 to spend or $5,000.

Duck drop tickets are only $5 or 5 for $20 with a chance for winning $5,000 for first place and $1,000 for second place.  Players can enter the golf tournament for $125 and receive lunch and 10 complimentary Duck Drop tickets with their entry fee.  There is a full list of prizes on the Great Dam Duck Drop website but just to give you an idea, there is a Closest to the Hole Contest for a set of Calloway Golf Clubs and Bag, a Hole in One Contest to win a Big Thunder Pontoon Boat, a Long Putt Contest for cash and much more.  For those who don’t golf, it is easy to be a hole sponsor for just $50.

The Family Fun Zone opens at 10am on Saturday in preparation for the launching of the ducks at noon.  Families can enjoy games and prizes, food and snacks, a dunking booth, a bounce house and lots of other things to do.  Finally, the viewing area for the Duck Drop is within walking distance of the Fun Zone so everyone can gather just past the Lake Ozark Campground and  RV park office and watch the “race.”  Winners will be announced back at the Fun Zone after the race is over.  But they do not have to be present to win, all winners will be notified via phone if there are not there.

If you would like to see the heart of the Lake of the Ozarks at work in the community, the Lake of the Ozarks Regional Economic Development Center thinks the Great Dam Duck Drop is a great opportunity to do so.  If you would like to give to the community or volunteer at the Lake of the Ozarks, we know there is something for everyone to contribute.  We are all about teamwork and community cooperation, and we are here to help with resources to aid everything from starting a business at the Lake of the Ozarks to organizing volunteer committees.  If any of that sounds interesting to you, join us at one of our monthly meetings.  Our next one is on Thursday, August 19, 2021 at 1pm at the State Fair Community College Lake Campus in Osage Beach.  We would love to see you there!
